When the filters within the muffler become congested the car cannot “breathe” properly which results in a compromise of the engine’s performance and the increase of gas consumption. Generally mufflers are damaged from the inside out, meaning that the muffler needs to be replaced months before it is ruptured on the outside. A congested muffler can also cause gas reflux and thus damage the catalyst.
